Well here we are again!
It is hard to believe that summer is almost over and that we are getting ready for the first guild meeting of the new year. I know everyone has probably been busy over the past few months working on projects and that you are as excited as I am to see (and hear) what everyone else has been doing. I can hardly wait for Show and Tell - it is always so inspiring!
There have been a lot of people working on projects over the summer and planning programs for the coming year – a big thanks to all of them! The list of planned activities is incredible! Get the details and hear some exciting announcements at the September meeting!
As most of you know I am new to this position and fairly new to quilting – telling you that will hopefully take the pressure off – in both areas. I am learning a great deal from the remaining members of the executive and I will be asking Lisa to act as our “coach” on “rules”. I look forward to meeting more of you and learning as much as I can about this wonderful thing called quilting.
The executive would like to continue the format that was set by the past executives - to keep business to a minimum and quilting to a maximum - and most of all – to have FUN. Besides regular guild meetings the executive meets monthly. If you have any questions, comments, concerns or suggestions that you would like addressed at those meetings, please feel free to pass them on to any member of the executive – they will be wearing their name tags.
Looking forward to seeing you September 9th!
Well, it's that time of year again - out here at the lake my flowers look like they have had frost already! Not to worry, quilting season is just beginning. Barb Schmidt, Marilyn MacGillivray, Brenda Anbreault and I, have met and planned (we think) a terrific year for all of you. Sheena Schultz did a summary of the questionnaires from last year and we took into account everything that we possible could. We think beginners to advanced will find this year really exciting! At the September meeting we will have a display of all the monthly programs, so be sure to take some time to look it over.
As always, Show and Tell is a huge part of every meeting, so please remember to bring yours! We will always have raffles, door prizes, library and coffee breaks. The Log Cabin has purchased new, lightweight tables, so it is going to be very easy to set up for each meeting, so we ask that everyone, that is able, please help in setting up and putting away tables.
There are a couple of really terrific workshops planned with Aie Rossman of Lotusland's (see her website at www.lotuslands.ab.ca ) and Martha Cole, fibre artist (look at this website for samples of her work: www.quantumlynx.com ) in 2005. We will have sign up sheets for these at the September meeting, so bring your chequebooks. There is a limited number of spots for each workshop, but if there are more quilters that want to get in, we will try and accommodate in some way.
Here is a brief description of our year, keep in mind that this is subject to change in cases of emergency, etc.: We also have some small demos and Make & Takes to be included where/when you least expect them.
September - Ricki Timms
Don't get too excited! Ricki was very busy so he sent his DVD instead. We will show a portion of the DVD at the meeting then the DVD will then be available to borrow from the library. The DVD is from his Caveman class and it should give you enough to "tickle your fancy" (what did I just say??!!).
As this is the first meeting of the year, time will be spent dispensing information on various things such as the Mystery Quilt for the year (I hear many summer days and lots of laughter went into creating this for our guild by Cheryl's group), UFO Days, the Guild Quilt Show next May including the Charity Quilt Raffle, budgets and etc. So please bring your calendars and cheque books to get your new year organized.
October - Machine Maintenance and "What's This Gadget For?"
November - Marilyn Wilson to demo her new line of patterns
December - Christmas Goodies and "Brenda's Denim Circle Quilt"
January - Hand Quilting and Machine Quilting Hints andTips, plus "I am having my quilt quilted by a Professional Longarm business, what do I need to do before I send it to them?"
February - Aie Rossman of Lotusland Designs - you may have seen her on Simply Quilts - this is one to mark on your calendar so you won't miss out! Aie Rossman Workshop on Machine Appliqué (cost $40.00)
March - English Paper Piecing Make and Take
April - Flowers: 3D, Folded, and whatever other way we can find!
May - Martha Cole Lecture - another "Mark your Calendar so you won't miss" meeting Martha Cole Workshop (Cost $45.00) (what a deal!)
June - Wow, already - you will have to wait and see what great things we have in store for June
As you can see we have a fantastic year planned for you. But, if there is anything we have missed and you think it should be part of our Program, please contact me, Faye Steinbach at fsteinba@telus.net or 662-3421.
Report on June 2004 Questionnaire
As at June 30, 2004, we had 101 members in the Sherwood Park Quilt Guild - Log Cabin Quilters
(this might be the place to remind you that our Guild does have pins for sale - $5 and are available at the main table). 41 questionnaires were completed and returned and these are a summary of the results:
· What was your most enjoyable meeting: demos (23), make and take projects, activities geared to meeting other members and Show & Tell
· Library - many mentioned that they would like to seee subscriptions to magazines included (if you check with the library you will be happy to know they listened to this request)
· Are you in favour of a Quilt Show in 2005: 4 - did not answer either way to this question, 3 no’s and 34 yes’s (the 2005 Quilt Show will be held at Festival Place May 27 & 28 which will include a Merchants Mall - mark this on your calendar!)
· Should we continue with UFO days? 24 Yes, 5 No and 12 no response (as most want to see UFO days continue, please mark them on your calendars so you can attend them - contact Sheena Schultz at sewpwrfl@telusplanet.net )
· Should we have UFO evenings in addition to our regular meetings? 12 said yes to week-nights, 4 to week days and 25 had no responses
· Would you participate in another Mystery Quilt? 26 yes, 9 no and 6 no response
· Should we continue with door prizes? 37 yes, 3 no and 1 no response
· Are you interested in a Guild Retreat? 21 yes and 20 no response
· What would you like to see/learn at future meetings? Demos and Guest speakers (many ideas and suggestions were included with answers and we have tried to incorporate as many as possible.)
· Would you be interested in a workshop put on by the Sulky Thread Co? 30 yes, 6 no and 5 no response (we are still looking into this). The majority would like to see more workshops put on by the Guild (we have two set and a couple in the works)
· Suggestions for a charity project for the new guild year? Quilts for inner city, foster home children, chemotherapy hats (if there is anyone interested in taking on any of these projects, I am sure you would get plenty of help, but we need someone to organize them. Please talk to our President Jo McAuley)
· Comments, suggestions, things you liked, things you didn't like: less business, more learning at meetings, time to socialize and meet other members.
The Block of the Month committee will be taking registration for the 2004/05 year at the September meeting. This year’s six-block mystery quilt will start in October 2004 and finish in March 2005. This would leave lots of time to complete the quilt top for the June meeting, where a “viewers choice” prize will be given. The cost for the entire year will only be $10, but to make it easier for the bookkeepers, we will be collecting the entire amount at the September meeting. So tuck an extra $10 into your wallet – this one should be lots of fun!
Did you visit quilts shops while on vacation? Have you run out of space for your new purchases? Make space - bring your surplus patterns, notions and fabric to the September 9th meeting and drop them off with the ladies who sell the raffle and door prize tickets. They are grateful for any and all donations. Thank you for thinking of the Sherwood Park Quilt Guild.
Please mark in your calendar the dates for the 2nd Bi-Annual Sherwood Park Guild Quilt Show - Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28, 2005 at Festival Place in Sherwood Park. Faye Steinbach and Rossana Vojacek will have more information at the September meeting.
Happy September birthday to:
Lisa Avis, Carlene Bourassa,
Sharon Hankinson, Shirley Leckie,
Jo McAuley, Iris Olinek, Lorraine Schmitz, Diane Slywka
This year’s Quilting Retreat coordinators (Karen Antler, Lorna Themelis, Doris Liebrecht, Shirley Elliot and Audrey Howery) are pleased to provide you with information on the next weekend retreat.
The retreat will be held at Camp HeHoHa (Health Hope and Happiness) on Lake Isle and has been scheduled for March 18th to 20th, 2005. The cost of the retreat per person will be $130.00. This will cover 6 meals, which is 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 suppers, as well as a double occupancy room. To reserve your spot for the retreat, we are requesting a $30.00 deposit no later than December 31, 2004. Please see Karen Antler regarding your deposit.
The Retreat Committee has agreed that the members of the Sherwood Park Quilt Guild will have the first opportunity to register. However, to keep the rental costs down, we will require 40 quilters to attend, so if after December 31, 2004, we do not have the required number of Sherwood Park Quilt Guild members signed up, we will accept registrations from non-members.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the retreat. A number of fun surprise activities have been scheduled. One of the activities will be a garage sale. We will have a separate table for garage sale items. If you bring items for the garage sale, please mark each item with the amount you hope to sell the item as well as with your name. To make the sale interesting, items should be open for negotiation.
Updates on the retreat will be provided in the monthly newsletter. If you have any questions concerning the retreat, please do not hesitate to approach any of the committee members.
UFO Days will now be known as QUILTERS’ DAY OUT and we are hoping to entice a lot of members to join us. We have plans for a number of fun projects! The day will be set up as a day to sew along together and work on the same project or just come out to work on your WIPs (Works in Progress) or UFOs (Unfinished Objects). It's going to be a fun and relaxing day. The committee will have the days booked and confirmed very soon so everyone can plan to be there. We will post the days on our website as soon as possible.
The Quilters Day Out/Workshop Committee members are: Lisa Avis, Betty Groenink, Isobel Wilson and Sheena Schultz. We hope you will join us for all the fun this year! If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact any one of us.
