2006 Sherwood Park Quilt Guild
Cabin Fever Retreat
February 24, 25 & 26, 2006
Camp He Ho Ha
SHERWOOD PARK QUILT GUILD
CABIN FEVER REPORT
by Lisa Avis
Forty-eight enthusiastic ladies attended this year’s retreat at Camp He Ho
Ha along with at
least a quarter of a million dollars worth of sewing machines! Looking
across the sea of
machines was enough to give any quilters heart a thrill!
The extra people this year made the retreat that much more fun. There was
always at least one
table roaring with laughter. For those of us who enjoy visiting, there
were enough projects and
people to talk to that we could procrastinate as long as we wished…
As usual, the food was fantastic. I’m sure it was made more enjoyable
knowing that we weren’t
responsible for cooking it, or cleaning up afterwards. For some of us
there was enjoyment
knowing that we didn’t even have to drag out of bed to the cafeteria to
have a delicious
breakfast!
The variety of projects was awe-inspiring. As was the variety of projects
purchased on the way
to retreat. In fact, I’m not sure why any of us brought anything along.
What with last minute
inspiration as we shop-hopped and all the nifty grab bags there was more
than enough to keep
the most ardent quilter busy throughout the weekend.
Special thanks go to all the stores that participated in our shop hop.
Especially thanks
to J & J Quilting for issuing us the “Retreat Challenge”. Hopefully there
will be many
brightly coloured samples at June’s Show & Tell.
Also thanks to Sewing
With Class who
once again hauled half their store over to the camp. They also took last
minute panic phone
orders for those who needed fabric or thread. There were great demos
offered this year. For
instance, I hadn’t previously considered using dryer lint as an
embellishment! But seriously, I
think it’s safe to say that Sewing With Class gave us all inspiration for
embellishment.
I also feel safe saying that most of us really enjoyed making a small
postcard to mail home
to ourselves. The kits sold like hotcakes!
Sheena, Doris and Joan warned us that these are addictive, so all those
who bought more than
one: beware!
A couple more highlights were the massages and the secret sister gift
exchange. Also, there
were a few lessons learned: for instance, “early to bed and early to
rise...” This proverb should
be taken to heart. It may seem like a good idea to play tricks on those
who leave early,
however, odds are they will beat you back in the morning and retaliate.
This retreat could not have been made possible without the excellent
organizing job done by the
retreat committee, especially Joan Smith. Joan had so much fun organizing
this year that she’s
volunteered to organize the retreat next year, which will be held on
February 2 – 4, 2007 at
Camp He Ho Ha. She’s looking for volunteers, so if you have any great
ideas or just like to lend
a hand please feel free to talk to her at any guild meeting or email her
at: esmac@telus.net .
If you have pictures or stories from the retreat that you would like to
include in the next
newsletter or website, please submit them to me at:
lisaavis@shaw.ca or to
cvaage@telus.net for the website.
