PROGRAM COMMITTEE – Faye Steinbach

November Program:

The November meeting unfortunately falls on November 11 but we have a full program planned.

First, Marilyn Wilson will be bringing us her line of patterns. Marilyn is one of our members, but is currently working in Winnipeg. Her home is still in Sherwood Park so she considers the guild her "Home Guild".   During the past year Marilyn had designed and marketed a line of patterns.  If anyone was at the Chicken Coop in Mundare during the shop hop (with the quilt stores in our area) you would have seen her designs displayed. She is also hoping to have two additional designs completed to bring with her to the meeting where she is going to have a trunk show of all her designs and if anyone wishes, she will be selling the patterns to our members (only) at cost.

Secondly, Brenda Ambeault found this great pattern that uses old jeans. You could also use any fabric but by using old jeans it makes a great quilt for camping or picnicking (and don't we have the weather for that!).  We will break into smaller groups with a group leader showing us how to make this quilt.  This is going to be a "hands on" activity so you will need to bring the following:  Thread, hand sewing needle (for denim), scissors, thimble, 6 circles of denim (7 1/2"  in diameter), 4 squares of fabric measuring 5 ½ inches by 5 ½ inches square (this fabric will be your fabric that shows on the top of the quilt). The group leaders will show you how this "easy" quilt is put together while you baste it together.  You can then go home and make several for Christmas presents...

Program Update:

We have a terrific meeting planned for December.  As usual, we will be having a potluck and at the November meeting the Coffee Ladies, who have also agreed to organize the December food, will explain to you what you will need to bring for that.  The remainder of the program is going to be exceptional and I can promise you that you will love it!  You won't need anything for the remainder of the meeting, but your eyes and ears. Oh, of course we will always have the Show and Tell, so bring all your completed Christmas items!

The workshops are filling up!  To set a price for the workshops we have to take into account 1) the instructors fees, 2) the room rental and 3) the number of participants.  We base the price on a set number of participants and if we get more, obviously we have made a bit more money than we require.

The "Free Motion Quilting" workshop on November 27 has been filled to the limit, so we are happy to offer a lunch with the workshop. Anyone that is taking this workshop, please don't bring your lunch as there will be a warm lunch supplied.  If you do not have your supply list for this workshop, please see Faye or call her at 662-3421.  I will take names on a waiting list for this workshop in case we get any cancellations.

Update on availability of upcoming workshops through the Program Committee:

Sheer Illusions - Jan 12 & 19 Cost $65. Workshop has room for a few more quilters.  This will be held at the Art Barn in Sherwood Park. This is a great class to stretch your "quilting brain" and shows you how to use thread sketching and layering of fabrics to make your masterpieces pop! A class sample will be on display at the November meeting.

Lotusland Designs - Feb 11 &12, 2005 Cost $45. Workshop is full and taking names for the waiting list. Check out  Affairs of the Heart by Lotusland Designs in the library or the website:  www.lotuslands.ab.ca

Martha Cole Workshop - May 13/14  Cost $90 We will still take names for this workshop as we are now trying to combine with the Leduc guild so that we may have one workshop on Landscapes and one on Flowers. Space is limited though, so sign up fast.  Visit this website to see Martha's work:  www.mcintyregallery.com

QUILT SHOW REPORT – Loy Becker

2005 Bloomin’ In The Park Quilt Show Committee Report

Thank you to everyone at the October meeting for your sense of humor and for accepting the pictures of the raffle quilts!  We had a lot of fun with those pictures on Thanksgiving Monday and there were probably a few overdone turkeys while our families waited for us. We kept Casey, our young photographer, in stitches - could six Moms REALLY have this much fun!!?

The following Guild Members worked, or will be working on the raffle quilts in some way whether it was picking out the fabric, cutting the fabric, making the blocks, putting the tops together, or finishing the quilts: Brenda Ambeault, Joan Sabadash, Janet Harper, Carole Martins, Diann Podlubny, Paule Mihill, Mary-Jane Cousins, Jo McAuley, Cindy Hawck, Lorna Ball, Lisa Avis, Betty Kroeker, Anne Patton, Lynne Reynar, Cherry Hollinshead, Wendy Beller, Brenda McLeod, Lana Whatley, Cindy Morrison, Iris Olinek, Florence Krocker, Shelly Aman, Faye Steinbach, Isobel Wilson, Pam Sutherland, Shirley Leckie, Sherry Fallow,  Joyce Walters, Rossana Vojacek and Carol Larose.  The blocks all look terrific and your work is sincerely appreciated.

If you don’t know yet, we have asked Penny Barrett to be our “Feature Quilter” for the Show.  Penny won “Best of Show” in 2003 and she will have her own area to showcase some of her fabulous projects.  Lana Whatley is working on prize ribbons which will be unique to our Show and Shirley Millar is organizing the Guild Sale table.

We hope there will be lots of this year’s Guild Mystery Quilts completed so we can display them all at the Show.

Other than we hope you are working on your quilts to show-off in May 2005 (remember the labels and sleeves!!), that’s it for this update!  See you at the November meeting!   THANKS EVERYONE!!

THE SCRAP BAG

THANK YOU

I would like to express my appreciation to the guild for the Birthday Card and Fabric.

Thanks,

Betty Groenink

Did you get a chance to purchase a Sherwood Park Quilt Guild water bottle? They're awesome, they're attractive, they don't spill, kids love to squirt them, they're $5, they're going fast. See Lisa Avis at the next meeting to get yours!

Craft Sale

If you don't have time to make all those Christmas gifts (either for yourself or others) be sure to go to the Craft Sale at the Presbyterian Church on November 13, 9 am - 4 pm.  The address is 265 Fir Street, which is across the grounds from the Log Cabin where we have our meetings.        I am almost snowbound out in the country, so I am busy making lots of quilted items for this sale.  For those of you that have come to my fabric garage sales, hopefully you will come to this sale to see that I actually do complete some things and not just sell off my fabric.

I will have wall hangings, table runners, stockings, Christmas tree decorations, bags, etc. etc. I know there are lots of other tables with great things to sell as well.  Hope to see you there.

~Faye Steinbach

P.S. If you unable to make it to this sale, I will have all the items that aren't sold (if there are any....) for sale at my daughter's home the next day.   54 Cranberry Way (turn north on Cloverbar Road and at the 2nd set of lights after Baseline Road turn right, follow it until you have to turn - then turn right and it’s right there!)  I will be there from 1 o'clock until 5 pm, so please drop by. FS

I would like to thank everyone for being so terrific in contributing to the newsletter this month.  And thank you to Guild Members who send me internet links so I could add little information pieces.  Keep them coming! Next newsletter deadline is the third Friday of September.  Thank you! J Doris Liebrecht (liebrechtd@inac.gc.ca or d_liebrecht@hotmail.com )
