May 13 &
14 - Martha Cole Flowered Fantasies Workshop |
Hi Everyone:
This is concerning the Martha Cole Workshop we have planned in May. Actually, it is the Leduc's workshop they have planned for May. Alberta Trinton (from the Leduc Guild) and I tried to get Martha out here and share expenses, but unfortunately Martha had a commitment she could not get out of that was right in between our dates. So, the Leduc Guild is bringing her in May 2-3 for the Floral Workshop ($90) and 3,4,5 for the Landscape Workshop ($130).
Our Floral Workshop is completely full (with a waiting list) and will still be May 13-14 in Sherwood Park. But, for anyone that still wants to take this workshop or the Landscape workshop the Leduc Guild has invited us to take their workshop.
This will also fill up extremely fast (the Edmonton Guild is waiting to get in to it, but Alberta has said she will wait a few days to hear if anyone from our Guild wants to fill the few spots left) as we were trying to work together on this.
If you are interested please call, ASAP, Alberta Trinton at 980-0507 or myself (Faye) at 662-3421.
Thanks.

2004/2005 Guild Meeting Sneak Peeks:
June 2nd (note date change) - Year End Party!
An effort was started to collect blocks to make quilts for the families of the 4 RCMP members:
Constable Anthony Gordon
Constable Lionide Johnston
Constable Brock Myrol
Constable Peter Schiemann
The block pattern chosen is http://www.quilterscache.com/D_F/FourWindsBlock.html
Thanks Marcia.
Ian Tyson, a Canadian singer, sang a song at the memorial called These Four Winds... and for that and other obvious reasons - we thought this block is very appropriate.
If you feel you'd like to contribute a block or more towards these quilts, please just follow the same colours as on Marcia's site...using red/gold/off-white and navy. These colours well represent the RCMP.
Instead of making a HST with gold on both sides, is it OK to use a gold 2.5" square instead. It would seem that all of Marcia's testers have used this shortcut.
For those that want to contribute a block, but don't feel as though they can make this block, a second block has been chosen, and these blocks will be used to make quilts for the child and unborn child of the one officer. Use red or golds for the leaves and navy for the background.
http://www.quilterscache.com/M_O/MapleLeafBlock.html These are to be done up as 12.5 inches unfinished or preferrably as 6.5 inches unfinished since they will be for child quilts.
Thanks for considering this. Gifts of fabric for binding or backing are also welcome.
They can be sent to:
Pieces
10111 - 99 Avenue
Fort Saskatchewan, AB
T8L 2T4 Canada
Any notes or cards that you send with the blocks will be forwarded along with the quilts.
So many people have asked for the timeline - I have women from the local quilting guild on standby and ready to help get these together, so I'm thinking that the sooner the blocks can start coming in the better. We were aiming to try and get them all in the mail by April 3 (the month anniversary of the tragedy). However, if you still want to contribute a block, we are still accepting them.
Thanks
Susan

What? A means of getting a variety of charm squares.
When? Squares are to be brought to the May meeting; the exchanged squares will be returned at the June meeting.
How? You will be asked to prepare a number of bags that contain 25 - 5 inch squares as well as your name. You will then receive the same number of bags in return of other peoples’ squares. The maximum number of bags that you may want to prepare will depend on the number of people who wish to take part in this exchange. However you may prepare fewer bags than the maximum if you wish. (Of course all fabric must be 100% cotton of quilt shop quality, no flannels.)
Looking forward to organizing this exchange.
Mary-Jane Cousins
P.S. Check out Pat Speth’s website www.patspeth.com for free patterns using 5 inch charm squares.
BLOCK OF THE MONTH
Please remember to bring your completed Block of the Month quilt top to display at the May meeting (which will qualify you for a special prize). We also want to see all those blocks that haven’t found their way into a quilt top yet – the inspiration may encourage others to finish up!
June will bring us to the end of the 2004/05 Block of the Month project with a prize drawn from all those showing a finished quilt.
We on the committee have been amazed at the blocks that are shown every month, they are truly outstanding.
SHOW AND TELL
We know there are quilts hiding out there and the “Show and Tell Committee” wants to show them off for you! Every year, when surveyed, members tell us loud and clear that “Show and Tell” is their favorite part of the meeting, but lately, the number of quilts has been dropping. Remember that it doesn’t matter whether your quilts are big or small, old or new, even if your “points have disappeared”, we all love to see them anyway. Even the simplest quilts provide the kind of impetus that cannot be gotten from a book or magazine. So, don’t forget Show and Tell this month – it is a large part of what makes this guild so special.
QUILT RAFFLE
I don't know if everyone in the guild realizes why we are doing the quilt raffle, so I thought I would explain it again. We hold this raffle, in conjunction with our quilt show, for two reasons. One, to raise money for a worthy cause, which this year is "Compassion House - for Breast Cancer Patients" and two, the other 50% goes back to our guild for programming, etc. Our membership can only stay at the $35 if this raffle is successful. So, we expect our members to do their best to sell the tickets, and if all else, buy a book themselves to support these two worthy causes.
We still have 70 books of tickets to sell, so unless, we want our membership dues to increase, please remember to take a few more books of tickets. Thanks!
Faye Steinbach
Editor’s Note: Thanks Lisa for posting a picture of our quilt raffle on our website! Check it out and email it to all your friends! http://www.geocities.com/cabin_quilters/QuiltShow.html

Prairie Finds, Alberta Shows Off
My name is Judi Kendall and I represent a group call, Prairie Finds, Alberta Shows Off. We are
having a rural expo during Klondike Days in Edmonton. We are building a small town in the
Agricom. We would like to have artisans, crafters and rural businesses in our town. We have
two opportunities, a trade show booth, or the general store, which is staffed by our staff to sell
artisans and crafters products.
I was wondering if you might know of any of your members, in Alberta, who might be interested in
this opportunity. To find out more about the show we have a web page www.prairiefinds.com.
I know there must be lots of wonderful quilters in Alberta, as I have seen their work at other shows,
I would really like to have quilts either in a booth or in the general store.
Can you help me?
