PROGRAM COMMITTEE – Faye Steinbach

March Program

Is winter getting you down?  Is your skin starting to feel like sandpaper?  Are your winter boots starting to feel like cement bricks??

Then, you need to come to Sherwood Park Quilt Guild on March 10 when we create the colorful and uplifting New York Beauty Block.  This 8" New York Beauty block is also called the Crown of Thorns, the Railroad block, the Rocky Mountain Block, and the Rocky Mountain Road.  It is a curved block with spikes, spokes, or stars in the middle.

Using pre-cut rectangles and wonderful paper piecing, this 8" block is as easy as eating Pringles Potato chips WITHOUT the added calories and trans fats.  The first key to this block is CONTRAST in fabric!!  Make sure that your Star Background is DARK and your Star tips are LIGHT!

The second key to making this block a success is no matter what you do with this block say to yourself and anyone that is listening, "Aren't I just the most WONDERFUL Beauty!"

Please bring a basic sewing kit complete with a rotary cutter and small mat, scissors, pins, Add-A-Quarter ruler or 6" Omnigrid type ruler that shows a 1/4" mark, chocolates, PLUS the fabrics listed below.

There will be 10 sewing machines and 4 irons available for your use, but if you wish to have "no cue" waiting, please bring your own sewing machine and a power bar.

FABRICS REQUIRED:

Please have pre-cut:

Feature Fabric:    1 - 10 1/2" square...... this creates the Big Arc and the Little Arc

Dark Star Background fabric:   1 - 4 1/2" strip cut selvage to selvage then subcut into 6 - 3" x 4 1/2" rectangles

Light Star Tip fabric:    1 - 4 1/2" strip cut selvage to selvage then subcut into 5 - 3" x 4 1/2" rectangles

Unsure of which three colors to bring??  Why not choose three Fat Quarters....... one feature fabric fat quarter, one dark fat quarter, and one light fat quarter then cut into the appropriate amounts.

Want to see some websites to drool over??  www.quiltworx.com  Judy Niemeyer's Crown of Thorns

Books to drool over?? Valori Wells, "Radiant New York Beauties" CT Publishing

QUILT SHOW & RAFFLE

Quilt Raffle

I don't know if everyone in the guild realizes why we are doing the quilt raffle, so I thought I would explain it again.  We hold this raffle, in conjunction with our quilt show, for two reasons.  One, to raise money for a worthy cause, which this year is "Compassion House - for Breast Cancer Patients" and two, the other 50% goes back to our guild for programming, etc.  Our membership can only stay at the $35 if this raffle is successful.  So, we expect our members to do their best to sell the tickets, and if all else, buy a book themselves to support these two worthy causes.

We still have 70 books of tickets to sell, so unless, we want our membership dues to increase, please remember to take a few more books of tickets.  Thanks!

Tanzania Project – Brenda McLeod

In November 2002, there was an article in the Edmonton Journal about a group of missionaries - Charis Global Community Aid who were going to Tanzania to start and orphanage and a sewing centre.

The sewing centre is for the women who have been widowed, who according to Tanzanian culture the widows are stripped of their husband's possessions. This means the women are left without homes, food or means to support their children. The sewing centre will be used by these women to earn a living. They will be sewing school uniforms for orphaned and abandoned children.

When I read the article I realized that I had a sewing machine lying dormant and called up the lady in charge and offered it to her. She was thrilled, said she had one other offer. My machine is not new but it is definitely serviceable.

I asked her what else she would need and she said any type of sewing notion-buttons, bobbins, thread, zippers, etc. Being such a large group I thought that perhaps a few other people might have some things they would like to clear out (to make room for more). So hence the article. They are picking up my machine in March and are sending a container of goods down.

So, if anyone has any notions/machines they would like to donate to a very worthwhile cause, please bring them to the March guild meeting and I will ensure that they reach the people in charge.

Thank you.

Brenda McLeod

MINUTES FROM LAST MEETING – Joan Sabadash

Sherwood Park Quilt Guild Meeting

Thursday, February 10, 2005

QDO Committee: Lisa Avis announced that next QDo is March 12 at Sherwood Park Chamber of Commerce. The QDo for April will be a “Get Ready for the Quilt Show” theme. The Block of the Month committee will be on hand to help us all get ready to display our tops at the show. Members are also encouraged to finish up their projects for show entry. Program: Faye Steinbach announced some changes to the program for the upcoming year. Aie Rossman was unavailable to attend this evening due to a funeral, but the Fri/Sat workshops were still going ahead as planned (still two spots available.) Faye conducted Aie’s trunk show which was incredible. “Affairs of the Heart” is Aie’s book and is available in the guild library. Faye also demonstrated the “6 – hour” quilt which was very interesting and a good way to use up leftover 6” strips.

New York Beauty: Lorna Ball gave a short discussion about next month’s “New York Beauty” program which she graciously offered to lead after March’s speaker became unavailable. She passed out an information sheet which will be available online: http://www.geocities.com/cabin_quilters/NewYorkBeauty.jpg  Or please contact Lorna if you require further information.

Charity: The guild received a thank you note from the Strathcona Christmas Bureau for the donation of a quilt.

Quilt Show: Carol LaRose is charging ahead with plans and asked all interested volunteers to meet with her at the coffee break. If anyone else is interested please see Carol for a list of opportunities.

Show & Tell: Show and Tell went first with more time allotted as discussed at the January meeting. It went very well and everyone appreciated the extra time to view the quilts. Others enjoyed the stories behind the work.
