PROGRAM COMMITTEE – Faye Steinbach

Happy New Year Everyone!

I would like to thank the following people who helped make the December meeting so wonderful: Maureen Martel (and her husband who set up the tables and chairs for us), Linda Klem (who set up the lunch in the afternoon, knowing she wasn’t able to attend the meeting in the evening), Vicky Konkolus, Diane Slywka and Shirley Miller.  Your help was very much appreciated!

I would also like to thank the following quilters who were our models and gave up their evening to help out:  Diane Slywka, Shirley Elliot, Cathie Farmer, Kathy Kehler and Carol Larose.

Also to the many other volunteers who man (or should I say “women”) the front desk, the raffle committee, the Show and Tell group and the Mystery Quilt group. An organization this size (approximately 100 members) could not survive without everyone pitching in and doing their part – thank you!

January Meeting

I am still looking for volunteers to help with the hand or machine quilting demos for this meeting. If you could demonstrate either of these two methods of quilting, could you please call Faye (662-3421).

If you signed up for either at the December meeting you will have your list of supplies required.  If you weren’t at the December meeting and would like to attend either the hand quilting or the machine quilting mini demos, please bring the appropriate quilting supplies.

We will also be having a demonstration on a “6 Hour Quilt” that can be completed with a serger or a regular sewing machine.  For all of you that haven’t dusted off that serger in years, here’s the perfect opportunity. For the 6-Hour Quilt, just bring a piece of paper and pencil to write any notes you might want to take.

QUILTER’S DAY OUT

A special thanks to Lisa Avis, Lorna Ball and Judy Twardowski for the wonderful day of quilting on December 11 at our "Midnight Madness" or at least until some of your Christmas gifts get completed day.  It was well attended and a lot of fun.  The added visit from "Santa" was a great surprise with a small donation made to the Salvation Army Christmas station at the Sherwood Park Mall.  We even had a sit down lunch which gave us time to get to know other quilters better.  Thanks again to the three that made it all possible!   I hope many more quilters find time to join in the UFO days that we have planned for the new year as they are well worth it!

Future Dates for Q-DOs:
January 22 - Festival Place.
March 12 - Sherwood Park Chamber of Commerce.
April 16 - Festival Place

QUILTING RETREAT – Karen Antler

Sherwood Park Quilter’s Retreat Update

The Sherwood Park Quilters retreat will be held March 18th, 19th, and 20th at Camp Health, Hope and Happiness (aka Camp He Ho Ha).   More information on Camp He Ho Ha can be found at website www.camphehoha.com.

To keep the costs of the retreat down we need 40 participants.  We still have spots left.  To register for the retreat contact one of the following committee members or come see us at the regular Guild meeting.

Karen Antler - 468-2807

Shirley Elliot - 467-4212

Audrey Howery - 464-3110

Doris Liebrecht - 468-5920

Lorna Themelis - 464-0694

The cost of the retreat is $130 (including $30 deposit required) and provides participants with two breakfasts, two lunches and two supper meals. Accommodation has been set for double occupancy; bed linen is provided, however, please bring your own towels and toiletries.  Our meeting area will be the Recreation Hall.  Please bring your own refreshments and snacks to share.

The retreat committee is busy planning some very fun events. This is an opportunity to learn and gain new quilting techniques from each other and most important create new friendships.  Come and share and laugh with us.

Happy January birthday to:

QUILT SHOW & RAFFLE

Quilt Show  & Raffle

Well, an undertaking as large as a Quilt Show requires many, many volunteer hours.  Unfortunately, our group has run into some health problems and time constraints and we are unable to continue with plans for a show in May 2005.  We will continue with the Quilt Raffle and are very confident that we can sell all the tickets and will have the $1000 or more to donate to the Breast Cancer - Compassion House.  We will have the books of tickets available before the January meeting, so for anyone wishing more books, or for anyone that hasn’t taken any books, please come to the Raffle table next meeting. It is hoped that everyone in the guild is able to take at least 2-3 books of tickets to sell.

If there is another group that would like to take on the task of the Quilt Show our group is very willing to hand over any information that we have and to walk you through what has gone on so far.  There have not been any expenses incurred that cannot be recouped, but we will not cancel the Festival Place booking until the end of January, which will give any other group a chance to take over the show without having to re-book the venue.

We are very sorry for this decision but as this show is a large commitment we just felt we weren’t able to see it through all the way and rather than back out at the last minute, we felt giving another group a chance to continue with it at this time, was our best decision.
