MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT – Jo McAuley

Seasons Greetings!

Some of you may have noticed the “Message from the President” was absent from October’s newsletter. Oops!  Not only did I miss the deadline – I missed the extended deadline! So…last week when Doris sent out the reminder for this month’s newsletter I thought I’d get right on it – well it is due tomorrow and here I sit – wondering what the heck I’m going to write about.

In desperation I even went “on-line” to see if there was something I could plagiarize but found nothing.  What I did find was a number of very interesting quilting sites that were enlightening to say the least.

For example, did you know that there is a website for “quiltaholics” called “Confessions by Quilters” –  I don’t know about you but I think that some of that stuff (like how much fabric we REALLY have) is better left unsaid.

“Fabric-isms” was a site that listed songs, movies and books that used a fabric, apparel or textile term in the title like - Sock Hop, Arsenic and Old Lace, Keep Your Seams Straight and National Velvet!

Another had a collection of essays on quilting written by a quilter’s husband! It included titles like “Shop, Shop and Shop” and “Fat What?”

There were “Quilty Sayings”, “Quilting Games” Quilting Puzzles” and one entire website dedicated to displaying “Bad Bonnet Sues”!

All and all, I spent so much time visiting  websites that I ran out of time – again - so I thought I’d just send you my excuse.

Happy Holidays everyone – see you at the December meeting.  JO

PROGRAM COMMITTEE – Faye Steinbach

December Program:

We hope you enjoy the interesting program we have lined up for the December meeting.  We felt everyone is so busy this month so to be able to come and enjoy and an evening of entertainment would be ideal.  We have a full evening planned so please know you may be a bit late getting home.

The "snack committee" is organizing the "finger food/dessert" portion of the evening, and as I recall you are to bring a small item for that table.

We will be eating at the beginning of the meeting, followed by our program, and then there will be the great Christmas Show and Tell.  The Show and Tell this month is usually so wonderful because we get to see everyone's finished Christmas projects, so remember to bring yours!

~ Faye Steinbach

QUILTER’S DAY OUT – Lisa Avis

Midnight Quilting Madness

They said: “No sane person would dare try to plan an event so close to Christmas...”

I said: “NONE of my Christmas presents are done! I need a UFO day!”

Rather than staying up until midnight ALONE, slaving in my house, I would like to invite all of you to join me! Come on, there must be some other person who will be crazy enough to leave their presents until the last minute!

Since there isn't room for you all at my house, Lorna Ball has graciously offered us the hall of the Sherwood Park Presbyterian Church. There's only room for 20 procrastinators, and for $10 you will get good company, helpful advice, and pizza and pop for supper. Plus lots of coffee to keep us awake because we will be quilting until the wee hours! (We just have to make sure we're gone before church starts on Sunday... Unless you plan to attend services, in which case please bring along your 'good' clothes!)

Please reply to Lisa Avis at lisa.avis@gov.ab.ca if you are interested in attending, and bring along your $10 to the Dec 9th meeting. If I don't get enough people interested I'll have to cancel, but that's OK. It just means I'll be up all night alone at home because I'm the only person who leaves everything until the last minute. Please - no pity...

(For those who like summaries here's the nitty gritty):

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT:            UFO - Christmas presents

WHEN:            Saturday, December 11 - noon until the wee hours

WHERE:         Sherwood Park Presbyterian Church

QUILTING RETREAT – Karen Antler

Sherwood Park Quilter’s Retreat Update

The Sherwood Park Quilters retreat will be held March 18th, 19th, and 20th at Camp Health, Hope and Happiness (aka Camp He Ho Ha).   More information on Camp He Ho Ha can be found at website www.camphehoha.com.

To keep the costs of the retreat down we need 40 participants.  We still have spots left.  To register for the retreat contact one of the following committee members or come see us at the regular Guild meeting.

Karen Antler - 468-2807

Shirley Elliot  - 467-4212

Audrey Howery- 464-3110

Doris Liebrecht - 468-5920

Lorna Themelis - 464-0694

The cost of the retreat provides participant with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 supper meals. Accommodation has been set for double occupancy; bed linen is provided, however, please bring your own towels and toiletries.  Our meeting area will be the Recreation Hall.  Please bring your own refreshments and snacks to share.

The retreat committee is busy planning some very fun events such as a quilters’ garage sale. As the opportunity to learn and gain new quilting techniques from each other and most important create new friendships.  Come and share and laugh with us.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH COMMITTEE – Cheryl Schewe

Don’t forget to bring your completed block of the month to the meeting for display. Guild members were very interested in seeing how others chose to interpret the block. It was amazing to see how different they were.

It is hard to believe Christmas is upon us – this is our Christmas wish to you:

“May Christmas bring you the gift of time -  to complete those projects that are not quite finished and time to plan and work on all the projects that you want to start someday (and plans to use up your fabric stash); the gift of imagination - to try new techniques, colors and projects (and find new ways to use up/conceal your fabric stash) and the gift of joy - to take pride in the work you’ve done oveer the past year and in the anticipation of things to be accomplished in the new year (and look forward to new fabrics to replenish your stash!)

To everyone a Merry Christmas, peace and joy!!

Cheryl, Diann, Jaye, Nancy and Paule

“The best Christmas decoration is being wreathed in smiles.”

BIRTHDAY CLUB – Nancy Rohachuk

Happy December birthday to:  Ann Davies, Kathy Kehler, Mitzi Okura, Tanya Olinek, Vera Oszust, Diann Podlubny, Carol Vaage, Marilyn Wilson

QUILT SHOW – Shirley Millar

Plans are underway for the "Bloomin' Quilt Show" to be held May 27th and 28th.

We will have a table for items that will be for sale as we did at our previous Show. We are asking members to consider donating a quilted item or something like those cute little pins or dishtowels you make, with the proceeds going to the Guild for programming etc. These items will be priced at the discretion of committee members.

An alternate choice would be to let us sell those items that you like to mass produce on a commission basis with 10 percent of the sale proceeds going to the guild. You set the price on these items. So in the next few months when you are planning a project, consider making two with the thought of donating one for the Guild sale table.
