Our Guild's year-end survey results showed that many members would like to
put their love of quilting to use by making and donating quilts to a
charitable organization rather than making a monetary donation.
Alberta Tritton of the Leduc Quilting Guild sent out a plea for help in
making quilts for the women who stay at Edmonton's Compassion House.
The Compassion House Foundation was established in 1998 with the vision to
build a facility to support women with breast cancer from Northern Alberta
during diagnosis, treatment and the early stages of recovery. Since
opening the doors in January 2002, a warm and supportive home away from
home has been provided for close to 200 women with breast cancer and their
families. Guests were welcomed from over 50 different communities.
Sorrentino’s Compassion House is supported by the Compassion House
Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization. Their mission is to
provide sanctuary and support to women with breast cancer within and
beyond its four walls. The Foundation relies on donations to operate
Sorrentino’s Compassion House.
The Comfort Quilts committee is happy to report that KinderMorgan Canada
will provide a room in their Sherwood Park facility for a once-a-month
quilting "bee". We are asking interested members to piece a quilt top from
the quick and easy Modified Rail Fence pattern included in the newsletter.
Of course, if you would like to make the complete quilt – sandwiched,
quilted and bound, that would be wonderful!
Maureen Martell or Shirley Millar will collect your quilt top, along with
sufficient backing fabric, at the guild meetings. These tops will be made
into completed quilts at a monthly quilting "bee" by a group of 8 to 10
volunteers using the envelope method and tying. Batting will be supplied
by the Guild.
The Comfort Quilts "beehive" will be held on the 3rd Saturday of each
month from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting in November. A volunteer
sign-up sheet will be available at each month's Guild meeting.
We are hoping to be able to donate as many quilts as possible so let's get
started. Other quilts will be happily accepted but we ask that they be lap
size. If there are any questions please contact Maureen or Shirley.
The pattern is included in the newsletter and it is the one to use for the
Comfort Quilts. To print off the Modified Rail Pattern, click on the link
