Lori's Country Cottage - 2009 Celebration of Quilts
On September 19 & 20 Lori will hold her Annual Charity Quilt Show at Salisbury Greenhouse.
All proceeds will go to the Alberta Diabetes Foundation so please take some time to visit Salisbury at 52337 - Range Road 232, Sherwood Park.
You will find a detailed map at http://www.salisburygreenhouse.com
The entry fee is only $5 and the show runs from 10-4 each day.

Log Cabin Renovations

Log Cabin Renos
I'm so excited to tell everyone this bit of news! I know the hospitality and library committee will appreciate it as much as I did when I received a phone call over the summer from the manager of the Log Cabin, where we hold our monthly meetings.
Renovations were due to begin in the basement, including overhauling the back stairs which we use to access our storage area. I put out an email calling in the troops and a few days later a group of members and their much appreciated husbands gathered and made quick work of emptying our storage space. The best news of all, is that we will have a new set of stairs and storage area as of September 11.
Thanks to Liz Curtis and hubby, Carol and Richard LaRose, and Donna Towndrow for helping to empty the storage. We made quite an impressive assembly line if I do say so myself! A little extra thanks to Liz for storing all the bins in her garage. I promise Liz, we'll get them out of there ASAP!!

As another summer has zoomed by, so begins the new guild year! It is hard to believe how quickly the snow will return. With cold weather on its way, we ask you again to get out your machines and make a quilt for someone less fortunate. The charity we have picked for this year is The Zebra Child Protection Society. This is an incredible group of people who do very important work, protecting abused children. The following is taken from the Zebra Child Protection Centre’s website. It takes a community to protect an abused child.
Zebra Child Protection Centre: "Where Kids Can Tell"
• In Canada there are 114,607 cases of child abuse substantiated each year. This means that for every 1000 children in our country, 19 of them are known to suffer abuse. These figures account for only the cases that are reported and investigated through Canadian Child Welfare services.
• Statistics have shown that only 1 in 10 incidents of child abuse is reported. That means there are potentially over 1,000,000 cases of child abuse in Canada.
• The Zebra Centre serves over 1,000 children every year. Based on the above statistic - there are approximately 10,000 children who are suffering abuse right here in our community.
Statistic Sources: Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect - Major Findins, Public Health Agency of Canada, 2003. The statistics are alarming. The ravages of child abuse are staggering both in scope and complexity. Think of how many children suffer: our neighbours, relatives, friends... our children’s playmates and classmates. Just imagine how much courage ittakes for a child to disclose the nature of this crime, oftentimes knowing that it will tear apart his or her world.
Edmonton’s Zebra Child Protection Centre, the first centre of its kind in Canada, enables our community to respond to child abuse with a professional, compassionate and highly integrated program of healing and justice. In both spirit and amenities, Zebra is a child-centred service, from its playroom, children’s art and homemade blankets through its timely support services and its effective and rigorous approach to investigations.
The Zebra Centre brings together a multi-disciplinary community of professionals -- Edmonton Police Service, Alberta Children’s Services, Crown Prosecutors, Child at Risk Response Teams, medical and trauma screening professionals and volunteer Child and Family Advocates -- to an environment that nurtures the hurt child and uses all the wisdom of its partnership to see that justice is done. Through alliances within the community, the centre also puts children as well as their non-offending parents and guardians in touch with essential social service organizations.
The Zebra Centre gives all of us in our community an opportunity to play a part in safeguarding our abused children and playing a key role in their healing process. Whether the gifts you have to share are financial, professional, gifts in kind (such as toys, blankets, and clothing) or a commitment of your time as a volunteer, you can be assured that your contribution will play an important part in lending strength to abused children in our community.
We are asking for donations of quilts for the children served by Zebra. The quilts can be any size from baby quilt through to twin bed size. Lap quilts are great because they are portable. We have 2 patterns available for you to make- the links to these are on our website at cabinquilters.net . Do not feel limited to only these two options. If you have a favorite baby quilt or some other pattern you have always wanted to try- MAKE IT! We will take it gladly!

I would like to say Thank You to Joan Smith for planning and organizing our Guild presence
at the Arts Expo this past weekend. The event was extremely successful, selling almost 100 tickets!
We now have the wonderful opportunity to sell even more tickets at the Anne of Green Gables production which begins this weekend.
If you are able to cover any of the shifts listed below, please let me know ASAP.

I am happy to report that many members are busy putting together a wheelchair quilt for the some of the residents of The Sherwood Park Care Center. I have finished mine (future stipple Queen in training) and there were some done at the retreat last week (thanks to Nancy, Ann and Isobel, whose beautiful work I saw at Retreat). Also thanks to Gerri who made 2 tops at the quilting bee on Jan 21rst, Matt Sparrow who long armed them and Christine who is binding them. We also have some completed wheelchair bags as well.
If you did not get a stars pattern, you may get it online at cabinquilters.net or from any of the Charitable Works committee members at Guild meetings. They are Phyllis Rice, Donna Towndrow, Christine Wiggett and Carol LaRose. Please do not feel limited to the one stars pattern that we have provided. Let your imagination run wild and make whatever type of lap quilt you prefer. They should not be much larger than 36x48, as any wider and they are prone to get caught in the wheels of the wheelchair, wheelchair bags should be made of sturdy fabrics such as denims and canvas, while cottons are best for the lap quilts to keep them light. Many of the Care Center residents are quite frail, so heavy bulky quilts are not the best.
If you would like to help, but do not feel that you will complete the lap quilt, we will happily accept quilt tops and we will take care of finishing them. If you are able to donate backing fabric, please include it with your quilt top. If you just have backing fabric to donate, please let a member of the committee know.
We have booked the Bethyl Lutheran church for Saturday, March 7th from 10am to 5pm for all members to get together to work on their wheelchair quilts. Thanks to AnnaMarie for booking this. Think of this day as a chance to spend a fun day doing something you love for a good cause! Please sign up with Christine at the guild meeting if you would like to come.

This year ‘s Quilting Around the World Retreat was held at Camp HE HO HA on Jan 30-Feb1 st and we had a BLAST! I want to thank all of the participants as each of you made the retreat as fun as it was. There were 29 people in total, so there was lots of room to spread out all the goodies each of us bought during the shop hop. Some of the ladies, who stopped at Sewing with Class in Stony Plain on Friday on their way to retreat were treated to Timmies coffee and maple donuts as that shop had the Canadian theme for our shop hop game.
