President’s Message

Hello my Quilting Friends!
It has been such a busy month! Time simply flew by and I’m finding it
hard to believe it is time for another newsletter. As I look back over the
winter season, I am glad to have accomplished so much. I know with
warmer weather just around the corner, the urge to be outside will soon
overcome the desire to sew, quilt, and create. I hope the ‘quilting season’
was just as productive for all of you and that you will have many completed
projects to share this month.
I’m really looking forward to this month’s meeting as it will be a fun, hands
on type of night, where all members can participate. This is a wonderful
opportunity to mingle and chat with people we wouldn’t normally have the
chance to speak with.
I would like to send a huge heartfelt Thank You! out to Joan Smith and
everyone who helped her, for managing our presence at the Strathcona
Arts Expo. It went on without a hitch and was extremely successful selling
over 100 tickets for our quilt raffles. I would also like to Thank Phyllis Rice,
Barb Schmidt, and Sandra Hamilton for helping sell tickets at the Anne of
Green Gables presentation at Festival Place. Throughout that event we
managed to sell another 120 tickets. We are well on our way to a
successful raffle.

See you all Thursday!
Bradie Sparrow

March Program - Sandra Hamilton

,
Program Committee
This month the program will be presented by our
very own Joan Smith and Sheena Brennan-Schultz. These 2 ladies will be
showing a demo for a crazy quilted, paper pieced credit card holder. After
the demo members will guided through making their own holder and kits
will be provided for everyone. We will have a number of sewing machines
set up for members to work on.
Cindy Morrison and her Bee will be hosting the April Program. I am as
much in the dark as the rest of you so come prepared for a good surprise.
The May Program will be a presentation and Trunk Show from Sonja
Ohlmann.
If anyone would like to help me come up with program ideas for next year
please e-mail me at: sandrahamilton@hotmail.com

UFO Updates....

Thank you to the ladies that participated in the Feb 21st UFO day at
Whitecroft. Always interesting to see the work in progress of the various
projects. Plans are in the works for the last UFO before summer on May
8th at Whitecroft so please pencil in that date. Confirmation of date, time
and location will be forth coming at the April guild meeting.

Hand Quilting Frame

The hand quilting frame that was donated to the guild is available on loan
to members. We used it at the Arts Expo in February to demonstrate hand
quilting, and there is a picture of it at the Arts Expo on the website. The
frame is stored at Joan Smith's, contact me to pick up. It would be possible
for several people to quilt together on the frame, a charity quilt could be
hand quilted in an afternoon.

Workshops in June

We have the opportunity to schedule a couple of one or two day workshops
with Linda Beattie from Rexburg, Idaho while she is in Alberta June 10th to
19th. There are several options, she teaches: several different bags,
including a designer type handbag, totes, duffle bags, grocery bags.
We could do Log Cabin Lone Star, Stack n Whack or One Block Wonder.
Linda's also offered some different variations on Trip Around the World that
look complicated, but are simple and have interesting names like, Trip
down the Aisle, and Trip around the Playground. Some pre-cutting and
sewing for those, but nothing difficult, Linda has sent some pictures that we
can post on the webpage. I would like to know what members are
interested, check the webpage for photos of some of the class options.
We could easily do the Peeled Back curves, too. Linda taught a one day
class for us last June, and we love her easy teaching style.
Linda's fee for a one-day class is $40.00 per student, including
instructions, plus the shared cost to rent a facility. Probably need at
least 8 students, and up to 12-15 students.

Coming Soon!

Arts & Culture Council of Strathcona County (ACCSC) News

Thank you to those who volunteered their time February 14 & 15 to make
the Guild display for Arts Expo at Salisbury Greenhouse such a success.
We sold almost a hundred tickets on the raffle quilts; what a great start!
Thank you all for your cooperation and support.
Thank you to Liz and Tom Curtis; Donna Towndrow, Carol LaRose, Brenda
Buerger, Phyllis Rice, Sandra Hamilton, Carole Martens, Bradie, Matt,
Landen, Tylie and Ziegler Sparrow, Cindy & Amanda Morrison, Darlene
Mahlow, Marilyn MacGillivray, Bill Smith and to Geri Smit for donating the
blocks, quilting and making the embroidered label for Yolanda raffle quilt.
Special thanks to Richard LaRose, for picking up the quilt stands from
storage, setting them up, then taking them down on Sunday, and returning
the stands to storage.
Expo provided a opportunity to talk to lots of people in the arts community.
One of the people I talked to was Alfred Cunningham, Community Liason
Officer, Strathcona County. He asked me to make sure that guild members
are aware of the County's annual Art Acquisition Program. I have attached
the package or you can print it from Strathcona County's webpage
www.strathcona.ab.ca/culture you can check out the collection on line at
this webpage also.

Charity Quilt News

We had a very successful Charity quilting day this past Saturday at the
Bethyl Church. In attendance were: Donna Towndrow, Carol LaRose,
Jackie , Christine Wiggett, Phyllis Rice, Ann Taylor, Suzanne Russell, Cindy
Morrison, Amanda Morrison, and Bradie Sparrow. Lunch was generously
provided for us and delivered by Richard LaRose.
I am happy to report that many members are busy putting together a
wheelchair quilt for the some of the residents of The Sherwood Park Care
Center. I have finished mine (future stipple Queen in training) and there
were some done at the retreat last week (thanks to Nancy, Ann and Isobel,
whose beautiful work I saw at Retreat). Also thanks to Gerri who made 2
tops at the quilting bee on Jan 21rst, Matt Sparrow who long armed them
and Christine who is binding them. We also have some completed
wheelchair bags as well.
If you did not get a stars pattern, you may get it online at
http://cabinquilters.net/pdf.html (where you will se a link for wheelchair
quilts or bags) or from any of the Charitable Works committee members at
Guild meetings. They are Phyllis Rice, Donna Towndrow, Christine Wiggett
and Carol LaRose. Please do not feel limited to the one stars pattern that
we have provided. Let your imagination run wild and make whatever type of
lap quilt you prefer. They should not be much larger than 36x48, as any
wider and they are prone to get caught in the wheels of the wheelchair,
wheelchair bags should be made of sturdy fabrics such as denims and
canvas, while cottons are best for the lap quilts to keep them
light. Many of the Care Center residents are quite frail, so heavy bulky
quilts are not the best.
If you would like to help, but do not feel that you will complete the lap
quilt, we will happily accept quilt tops and we will take care of finishing
them. If you are able to donate backing fabric, please include it with your
quilt top. If you just have backing fabric to donate, please let a member of
the committee know.
