Past President’s Message
February 3, 2009
It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that as of Feb 3, 2009, I am resigning as
President of the Sherwood Park Quilters Guild. It has been a valuable learning
experience and I cherish the friendships that I have formed while being in the position.
Bradie Sparrow will take over as acting president. I wish you all the very best in your
quilting endeavors.
Sincerely
Gerri Smit
President’s Message
Hello My Quilting Friends!
Is February already here? Itʼs hard to believe that spring could be just around the
corner. We have a couple of exciting events happening in February. First is the Arts
Expo this weekend at Salisbury Greenhouse, a wonderful opportunity to display our own
works of art while also exploring other local artists. There is also the Anne of Green
Gables Production running from Feb. 20 - 28, which will feature the humongous quilt
backdrop that a few of our members helped to create.
In other news, our President Gerri Smit, has decided to resign from her position. As Vice
President, I welcome the challenge of taking on the position and look forward to leading
our guild through the remainder of the year. Please feel free to contact me with your
comments or concerns.
My husband Matt and I welcomed our newest addition on February 2nd, a
baby boy named Ziegler, who weighed 7lbs, 5oz. He is currently the most
popular member of our house and brings the running total up to 8
children!
See you all Thursday!

February Program - Sandra Hamilton, Program Committee
This month our speaker is the Owner of Sew
Divine, Pat White. Pat will be talking to us
about quilt labels and will be bringing notions
to set up a store for us to shop.
Pat is very generously donating her time to the
Guild, no small gift as anyone knows who has researched and presented
talks on any subject. Sew Divine is at Manning Crossing on the NW corner
of 137 Avenue and Manning Freeway. If you haven’t visited this store yet
do. Pat has a wonderful range of fabric and thread. There is always
something there I have to have.
We are working on an evening of demos for the March meeting.
The Crazy Quilt credit card case is one project you will learn about.
Cindy Morrison and her Bee will be hosting the April Program. I am as
much in the dark as the rest of you so come prepared for a good surprise.
If anyone would like to help me come up with program ideas for next year
please e-mail me at HYPERLINK mailto:sandrahamilton@hotmail.com
sandrahamilton@hotmail.com.
Upcoming UFO Dates....
Phyllis Rice has organized another exciting UFO date
for us on Saturday, February 21, 2009, from 10am to 6 pm . We will meet
again at the beautiful Whitecroft Hall and the cost is still just $10. A pretty
good price to get together and quilt all day! Sign up sheets will be ready at
the February meeting.

Charity Quilt News
⌘I am happy to report that many members are busy putting together a
wheelchair quilt for the some of the residents of The Sherwood Park Care
Center. I have finished mine (future stipple Queen in training) and there
were some done at the retreat last week (thanks to Nancy, Ann and Isobel,
whose beautiful work I saw at Retreat). Also thanks to Gerri who made 2
tops at the quilting bee on Jan 21rst, Matt Sparrow who long armed them
and Christine who is binding them. We also have some completed
wheelchair bags as well.
⌘If you did not get a stars pattern, you may get it online at
cabinquilters.net or from any of the Charitable Works committee members
at Guild meetings. They are Phyllis Rice, Donna Towndrow, Christine
Wiggett and Carol LaRose. Please do not feel limited to the one stars
pattern that we have provided. Let your imagination run wild and make
whatever type of lap quilt you prefer. They should not be much larger than
36x48, as any wider and they are prone to get caught in the wheels of the
wheelchair, wheelchair bags should be made of sturdy fabrics such as
denims and canvas, while cottons are best for the lap quilts to keep them
light. Many of the Care Center residents are quite frail, so heavy bulky
quilts are not the best.
⌘If you would like to help, but do not feel that you will complete the lap
quilt, we will happily accept quilt tops and we will take care of finishing
them. If you are able to donate backing fabric, please include it with your
quilt top. If you just have backing fabric to donate, please let a member of
the committee know.
We have booked the Bethyl Lutheran church for Saturday, March 7th from
10am to 5pm for all members to get together to work on their wheelchair
quilts. Thanks to AnnaMarie for booking this. Think of this day as a chance
to spend a fun day doing something you love for a good cause! Please sign
up with Christine at the guild meeting if you would like to come.
Winter Retreat - Message from Committee Chair - Donna Towndrow
⟐This year ʻs Quilting Around the World Retreat was held at Camp HE HO
HA on Jan 30-Feb1 st and we had a BLAST! I want to thank all of the
participants as each of you made the retreat as fun as it was. There were
29 people in total, so there was lots of room to spread out all the goodies
each of us bought during the shop hop. Some of the ladies, who stopped at
Sewing with Class in Stony Plain on Friday on their way to retreat were
treated to Timmies coffee and maple donuts as that shop had the
Canadian theme for our shop hop game.
⟐Thank you to all the shops who took part in the shop hop. If even half of
the other ladies spent as much as I did, then I know it was worth their while!
The shops included Loriʼs Country Cottage, Cottons and More, Earthly
Goods, Sew Divine, Quilterʼs Dream, Johnsonʼs Sewing Center, J&J
Quilting and Needleworks, Sewing with Class and Woodland Quilting. With
thanks to Pat of Sew Divine for the donation of a door prize and Sheena of
Over the top Quilting for a prize as well . Special thanks go to Matt and
Bradie of Quiltcetera.com for their donation of our 2 grand prizes. We drew
them at the end of retreat as after all that sewing there was much to be
long-armed!!
⟐The staff at Camp HE HO HA did a wonderful job as always. Our stay
included some great home-cooked food (and none of us had to cook or
clean up!). Marguerite makes delicious meals and went out of her way to
accommodate those people with special dietary requirements. It certainly
doesnʼt go unnoticed or unappreciated!! Thanks go out to Matt and Bobbee
as well for their help in making our retreat a reality.
⟐Special thanks to my fellow retreat committee members. They include
Carol LaRose, Joan Smith, Marilyn MacGillivray, Barb Few, Liz Curtis,
Phyllis Rice and Sheena Brennan-Schultz. Even though Sheena was
unable to attend, she still made us some fabulous re-usable name/luggage
tags (with fabric donated by Joan Smith). Each person on this committee
made it fun and easy and always brought a smile to my face at our
meetings. Thank you so much to each one of you. Hoping to see some
more of that beautiful work from Sundayʼs show and tell all finished at
Guild! (We will be bringing our completed Round Robin pieces to the March
meeting)
