President’s Message

Hello my Quilting Friends!
Well I must admit that I am happy to see the snow receding, and the
grass emerging beneath - even if it is brown! Spring is definitely on the
horizon and with it comes Easter, family gatherings, and good food. I am
especially fortunate, as I don’t have to prepare that big lovely meal -
Thanks Mom!
This also makes me realize that there are only a few short months left in
this guild year. Next month is already May when we will elect new executive
members, and begin the planning for another exciting year. I personally am
really looking forward to the Fall Quilt Show. I love browsing through the
quilts and being inspired by all the hard work quilters pour into their
projects. It really is approaching fast, a fact I realized when we received our
first vendor response today. Not only does she want a spot, but she has
reserved two tables!
I hope you all can make this month’s meeting. I am expecting to learn a lot
during program, like how to keep my machine running smoothly. With all
the sewing I do, that is really important! I am certain that most of you could
benefit from Terry’s session as well.

See you all Thursday!
Bradie Sparrow

April Program - Sandra Hamilton

,
For this month’s program, Cindy Morrison and her quilting bee have
arranged for Terry of The Sewing Center in Camrose, to visit us. Terry will
give us a talk about sewing machine maintenance, and trouble shooting.
Won’t it be nice to know what your machine doing, or why it is misbehaving
when you have a deadline? Be sure, not to miss this informative session
with Terry.
The May Program will be a presentation and Trunk Show from Sonja
Ohlmann - whom you may have seen at the Red Deer Quilt Show.
If anyone would like to help me come up with program ideas for next year
please e-mail me at: sandrahamilton@hotmail.com

Stash Buster Challenge

The stash buster challenge is due in May! If you haven’t started already, it
is time to get crackin’! There will be a prize people! See Sandra Hamilton or
visit the website for details.

Very Important....

Listen Girls and Boys, we are rapidly approaching our Annual General
Meeting (in May) and that means another round of elections. Cindy
Morrison will be calling everyone to see what positions they might be
interested in filling. Some positions that we need filled are:
Vice President
Secretary
Program Coordinator and committee
Hospitality Committee
and of course we can always use more members for the Quilt Show.
Please seriously consider supporting your Guild, and volunteering for one
of these positions.

Hand Quilting Frame

The hand quilting frame that was donated to the guild is available on loan
to members. We used it at the Arts Expo in February to demonstrate hand
quilting, and there is a picture of it at the Arts Expo on the website. The
frame is stored at Joan Smith's, contact me to pick up. It would be possible
for several people to quilt together on the frame, a charity quilt could be
hand quilted in an afternoon.

Workshops in June

We have the opportunity to schedule a couple of one or two day workshops
with Linda Beattie from Rexburg, Idaho while she is in Alberta June 10th to
19th. There are several options, she teaches: several different bags,
including a designer type handbag, totes, duffle bags, grocery bags.
We could do Log Cabin Lone Star, Stack n Whack or One Block Wonder.
Linda's also offered some different variations on Trip Around the World that
look complicated, but are simple and have interesting names like, Trip
down the Aisle, and Trip around the Playground. Some pre-cutting and
sewing for those, but nothing difficult, Linda has sent some pictures that we
can post on the webpage. I would like to know what members are
interested, check the webpage for photos of some of the class options.
We could easily do the Peeled Back curves, too. Linda taught a one day
class for us last June, and we love her easy teaching style.
Linda's fee for a one-day class is $40.00 per student, including
instructions, plus the shared cost to rent a facility. Probably need at
least 8 students, and up to 12-15 students.

Coming Soon!

Our Quilt Show has been booked! We will be hosting the 2009 Quilt Show

Charity Quilt News

Our Charity quilt campaign is almost wrapped up for the year. At our May
meeting, we will be making the official donation of quilts and bags to The
Sherwood Park Care Center. In order for members to finish up their
projects, we have are arranging one last Charity Quilting Day. Info and sign
up will be available at our April Meeting.

I am happy to report that many members are busy putting together a
wheelchair quilt for the some of the residents of The Sherwood Park Care
Center. I have finished mine (future stipple Queen in training) and there
were some done at the retreat last week (thanks to Nancy, Ann and Isobel,
whose beautiful work I saw at Retreat). Also thanks to Gerri who made 2
tops at the quilting bee on Jan 21rst, Matt Sparrow who long armed them
and Christine who is binding them. We also have some completed
wheelchair bags as well.
If you did not get a stars pattern, you may get it online at
http://cabinquilters.net/pdf.html (where you will se a link for wheelchair
quilts or bags) or from any of the Charitable Works committee members at
Guild meetings. They are Phyllis Rice, Donna Towndrow, Christine Wiggett
and Carol LaRose. Please do not feel limited to the one stars pattern that
we have provided. Let your imagination run wild and make whatever type of
lap quilt you prefer. They should not be much larger than 36x48, as any
wider and they are prone to get caught in the wheels of the wheelchair,
wheelchair bags should be made of sturdy fabrics such as denims and
canvas, while cottons are best for the lap quilts to keep them
light. Many of the Care Center residents are quite frail, so heavy bulky
quilts are not the best.

If you would like to help, but do not feel that you will complete the lap
quilt, we will happily accept quilt tops and we will take care of finishing
them. If you are able to donate backing fabric, please include it with your
quilt top. If you just have backing fabric to donate, please let a member of
the committee know.
